Why are period so expensive?

I honestly wish period products were more affordable, because every month it feels like I’m paying a literal bill just to exist. A box of pads and tampons can run close to $20, and that’s if I’m not even buying the “nice” stuff. It’s crazy that something I have zero control over ends up costing me so much money. Meanwhile, men never have to think about this, never budget for it, never feel that panic when they realize they’re out of pads at the worst possible moment.

This isn’t a luxury item. It’s not makeup or skincare. It’s a basic necessity, and it blows my mind that there’s still so much debate over whether period products are “essential.” It just feels unfair. What do you think should period products be free, cheaper, or do you disagree completely?

... Read moreSeriously, I felt this post in my soul! Every single month, it's like another unexpected bill just for something totally out of our control. It really makes you wonder, why are period products so expensive? It’s not just a feeling; there are some real systemic reasons behind the hefty price tag we face. First off, let's talk about the infamous 'Pink Tax.' In many places, period products are still classified as 'luxury' items, not essential health products. This means they're subject to sales tax, unlike other necessities like groceries or prescription medications. Can you believe that? It's like we're being taxed just for having a period, which is a natural bodily function! Then there's the cost of manufacturing and materials. If you’re trying to make more conscious choices, like opting for organic period products, the price jump can be significant. I saw an image recently that perfectly captured this dilemma: do you go for the more expensive organic options, knowing they might be better for your body and the planet, or do you stick to the more affordable regular ones just to make your budget stretch? It’s a tough choice we shouldn’t have to make, but it highlights how even the 'better' options come with a premium. Unlike other health necessities, period products often don't receive the same government subsidies or public support, which directly impacts their shelf price. Imagine if other basic hygiene products for men were taxed and priced the same way – there would be an uproar! This lack of support, coupled with the 'luxury' classification, contributes to what’s known as 'period poverty,' where individuals struggle to afford basic menstrual care. It’s truly heartbreaking to think that some people have to choose between food and period supplies. So, what can we do? We need to keep raising awareness, advocate for policy changes that remove the 'Pink Tax' and classify these products as health necessities. We should also push for initiatives that make period products free or cheaper in public spaces, schools, and workplaces – just like that public dispenser I saw in an image, but hopefully, one that's free to use! Exploring reusable options like menstrual cups or washable pads, while an initial investment, can also save a lot of money in the long term. Ultimately, it’s about demanding fairness. Our basic bodily functions shouldn't carry such a heavy financial burden. What are your thoughts on making period products more accessible and affordable for everyone?

I agree completely. Period products are basic necessities, not luxury items, and it’s frustrating that something so essential is still so expensive for so many people.
