Part 4 | Moving Across the World Series 🌍
Y’all… I really thought I had more time. 😅
My flight was Monday, but the movers were coming Friday. I dropped off my car Thursday and ended up driving this tiny little Mazda rental when I’m used to a Jeep Grand Cherokee — so basically, I had to play Tetris to get all five of my bags to fit.
I was running around trying to find some additional packing cubes (Walmart was out) when the movers showed up. So I panicked and grabbed some large hefty bags and some of those vacuum pack bags with a pump. (I don’t know about you guys, but he never works for me those vacuum bags always end up losing the 🙄) so right before the movers came at some point I just started tossing all my favorite clothes into my biggest suitcase without thinking about weight or space or anything then stuffed it in the trunk and backseat of the rental.
BUT — the movers were amazing. Seriously. They packed up my whole 4 bed / 3 bath house (6,600 pounds worth of stuff!) in five hours. Super professional, super fast, no drama.
Now everything I own is somewhere on the way to the UK… and the latest it could get to me is September 19. Fingers crossed it shows up earlier because I am living out of my suitcases until then 😩
Moving across the world is an adventure, but let me tell you, the actual 'Moving Day!!!' can be a wild ride! They sound great in theory, but like me, you might find they lose their seal. Invest in sturdy boxes and professional packing services if your budget allows. My movers were a lifesaver, packing 6,600 pounds in just five hours – truly worth it for that peace of mind. Next, prepare for the unexpected. My tiny rental car forced me to play Tetris with my suitcases, which was not ideal. Always have a backup plan for transportation on moving day, and consider reserving a slightly larger vehicle than you think you'll need. Also, keep an 'essentials' bag with you – a change of clothes, basic toiletries, important documents, and chargers. This saved me when I was living out of suitcases waiting for my shipment. Finally, managing the wait and the emotional toll. It's tough knowing all your belongings are somewhere across an ocean, with an estimated delivery date weeks away. I found it helpful to embrace the minimalist lifestyle for a bit, using it as an opportunity to truly appreciate what I have when it finally arrives. Connect with other expats or people who've moved internationally; their stories and advice can be incredibly reassuring. Remember, every chaotic 'Moving Day!!!' is a step closer to your new adventure. Keep those fingers crossed, and know that you're not alone in the whirlwind of moving across the globe!
