To see...

"To see, we must forget the name of thing we are looking at." ~Claude Monet

... Read moreClaude Monet's quote, "To see, we must forget the name of the thing we are looking at," invites us to experience the world around us with fresh eyes and an open mind. In my personal journey with art and daily life, I've found that this approach helps me notice details and beauty that I might otherwise overlook when caught up in labeling or judging objects and experiences. When we identify something simply by its name, we apply a mental shortcut that can limit our sensory engagement and emotional connection. For example, rather than seeing a flower merely as 'a flower,' if I momentarily forget its name, I begin to appreciate its shape, color gradients, the way light dances on its petals, or even the subtle scent it emits. This shift from intellectual recognition to sensory exploration can open the door to deeper understanding and creativity. Artists like Monet himself practiced this philosophy by painting impressionistic scenes that captured light and moments, instead of focusing on exact replicas or named objects. This method encourages us to value perception and feelings over rigid definitions. Applying this in everyday life, I try to observe people, nature, and surroundings without immediate judgment or categorization. It reminds me to remain curious and present, allowing me to gain richer, more nuanced experiences. Whether in art, mindfulness, or personal reflection, embracing Monet's insight can enhance how we interact with the world. Forgetting names does not mean ignorance but rather removing preconceived notions to truly see and appreciate the essence of things. This practice nurtures creativity, empathy, and a fresh perspective that enriches our lives.
