One line from today’s devotional has stayed with me all morning.
Actor Jim Carrey once said,
“𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘴 .. 𝘴𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳."
That sentence holds a lot of truth.
Over the years, I’ve learned that happiness and contentment are not the same thing. There have been seasons when I wasn’t happy with where I was — with unanswered prayers, with waiting, with watching things unfold in other people’s lives while mine felt still.
But I learned something important in those seasons.
You can be unhappy in a situation… and still learn how to be content while you wait for God to move.
Years ago, I shared this struggle with a pastor. I remember his response clearly because it settled something deep in me. He said, gently and without judgment:
“𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸
— 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘵."
That kind of peace isn’t passive.
It doesn’t mean settling or giving up.
It means trusting God 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 you grow.
Because growth requires change.
And change requires movement.
Comfort and mediocrity often share the same space — and nothing transforms there.
Looking back, I can see how often I tried to satisfy deep soul-longings with things outside of myself.
Even good things.
Even dreams fulfilled.
And still… there was thirst.
Jesus knew exactly what He was saying when He spoke of living water.
Not water that removes every longing — but water that meets us inside it.
Only He satisfies that kind of thirst.
Today, as I step into a new year with intention and reflection, I’m learning to bring my desires to Him honestly. To let Him shape them. And to trust that His peace — 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 — is part of the living water He promises.
The kind that doesn’t run dry.
