Many Kabayans who have ventured abroad, especially in countries like Australia, often face harsh judgments when they decide to return home without having secured permanent residency or other traditional markers of success. From my personal observations and conversations within the community, it's clear that going back does not equate to failure. Instead, it can signify a thoughtful choice to prioritize family, mental health, and peace of mind over societal expectations. Leaving one's comfort zone to chase a better future involves sacrifices and risks. Not everyone reaches the conventional milestones, but those who try inevitably gain valuable life lessons. These lessons include resilience, self-awareness, and emotional strength, which shape individuals into better versions of themselves. The journey tests one's limits and teaches the importance of knowing when to let go or pivot, which is a form of personal victory. It’s also crucial to remember that looking successful from the outside doesn’t always mean success internally. Some who remain abroad may face loneliness, cultural disconnection, or mental health challenges that go unnoticed. Hence, when a Kabayan chooses to return, it often reflects a courageous decision to protect their well-being and family relationships. It’s a choice to redefine success on their own terms. Instead of judging, we should embrace empathy and understanding. Every person’s story is unique, filled with struggles and triumphs that are not always visible. Encouraging kindness within our community fosters a supportive environment where different types of success are celebrated—whether it’s climbing career ladders abroad or choosing to come home and rebuild. This perspective encourages us to support one another compassionately, recognizing that success is multifaceted. It’s about growth, learning, and the courage to persist despite setbacks. By sharing these stories, we inspire others to honor their journey, whatever form it may take, and to see worth beyond traditional definitions.
