... Read moreEthics and morality have been pivotal topics in philosophy, shaping how individuals and societies determine right from wrong. This section of the Tzintiliztli Workshop Series dives deeply into the foundational concepts that guide moral reasoning and ethical behavior. Ethics is not merely about adhering to laws or social norms, which often vary dramatically between cultures; it is about reflecting on the values that steer our decisions and actions. The study of ethics encourages us to ask profound questions about what we ought to do, how we should treat others, and what principles should govern a just society. The workshop introduces three primary ethical frameworks that have influenced philosophical thought: 1. Utilitarianism: This consequentialist approach evaluates moral actions based on their outcomes, aiming to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number. It prompts a calculation of benefits and harms to maximize overall well-being. 2. Deontological Ethics: Contrasting with consequentialism, this perspective holds that certain actions are intrinsically right or wrong, regardless of the consequences. It emphasizes duties and moral rules that must be followed. 3. Virtue Ethics: Instead of focusing on rules or outcomes, virtue ethics centers on cultivating moral character traits like courage, honesty, and compassion. It encourages personal growth to become a morally exemplary individual. Understanding these frameworks is crucial because real-life moral decisions often require balancing different perspectives rather than relying on a single approach. Importantly, the distinction between morality and social conventions is a key theme. While social norms represent customary practices, ethics challenges us to consider what should be done, even when dominant opinions or laws contradict moral principles. Historical examples, such as the legality yet moral reprehensibility of slavery and Indigenous genocide, serve to illustrate this intricate relationship. This section invites learners to critically evaluate whether morality is objective—universal and unchanging—or subjective, shaped by cultural and personal viewpoints. This ongoing debate influences how societies understand justice and human dignity. By engaging with this material, participants can better navigate ethical dilemmas, develop thoughtful moral reasoning, and contribute to fostering communities grounded in justice and respect. The workshop also encourages active participation, sharing knowledge, and supporting nonprofit efforts to expand ethical education in diverse cultural contexts.

Why are we (largely) not taught ethics in school?
After all, the world is currently filled with highly intelligent people (IQs have risen markedly from generation to generation - called The Flynn Effect), yet look at the state of our world today. Intelligence has helped us in very real ways for sure, but everywhere we see its limitations.
