Beginner training for my first 10K

I hate and suck at running but wanted to prove to myself I could do it :) here is to day 1 🌞

Follow for the journey🔆

... Read moreOkay, so if you're like me and the thought of running makes you want to curl up with a good book, you're in the right place! Seriously, I've always said I'm absolutely NOT a runner, but here I am, embarking on this wild journey to train for my first 10K. My 'Day 1' run, which was about 1.7 miles (or 1.81 miles according to my app, done in 25:57 with a 14:21/mile average pace!), felt like a huge accomplishment, even if I was huffing and puffing. One of the biggest game-changers for me, and something I’m focusing on from Week 1 of my 'New To Running Plan,' is understanding and embracing 'conversational pace.' Before starting, I thought running meant going as fast as you possibly could until you couldn't breathe. Big mistake! Conversational pace basically means running at a speed where you can still hold a conversation without gasping for air. If you can talk in full sentences, you're likely at a good conversational pace. This isn't just some fancy term; it's crucial for beginners. It helps build your aerobic base, prevents injuries, and most importantly, makes running feel less like torture and more sustainable. For my first run, I really tried to keep this in mind, even when it felt slow. My goal wasn't speed, it was just...to keep going! So, how do you find your conversational pace? On my 'My First Run,' I actually tried to hum a tune or even say a few sentences out loud. If I couldn't, I knew I needed to slow down. It’s all about listening to your body. Don't be afraid to walk if you need to, especially when you're just starting out and doing intervals. My plan includes warm-ups, intervals, and cool-downs, and I'm learning that these are just as important as the running itself. A good warm-up gets your muscles ready, and a cool-down helps with recovery – vital for someone who dreads soreness! Another tip for fellow 'absolutely not a runner' types: celebrate every small win. That 1.7 miles or 1.81 miles might seem tiny to seasoned runners, but for me, it was monumental. I even took a selfie with my water bottle after, feeling incredibly proud! Keeping hydrated is something I'm trying to be mindful of, especially on these training days. Don't forget comfy shoes either; they make a huge difference. This journey is less about becoming an elite athlete and more about proving to myself that I can do something I once thought impossible. It's about consistency, listening to my body, and slowly building up. If you're thinking about starting a running journey, especially for a 10K, remember that it's okay to start slow. Focus on that conversational pace, enjoy the process (or at least try to!), and be kind to yourself. We're in this together!
