BLACK HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS PART 1

Black History Month began in 1926 as Negro History Week, created by historian Carter G. Woodson to make sure Black contributions were taught—not erased.

In 1976, it officially became Black History Month in the United States.

Black history didn’t begin with slavery—and it doesn’t end in February. 🖤

✨ Save & share to keep the history alive.

... Read moreAs someone deeply interested in history and education, I've always found Black History Month to be a powerful reminder of the rich cultural heritage and significant achievements of Black individuals throughout American history. What many people don't realize is that it started not as a month, but as Negro History Week, initiated by Carter G. Woodson in 1926. Woodson's vision was to ensure that Black contributions were recognized in schools and communities, to challenge the widespread erasure of Black history from mainstream narratives. Growing up, I appreciated how Black History Month serves as more than just a commemorative time; it’s an educational platform that reminds us that Black history is American history. It’s essential to acknowledge that Black history goes far beyond the painful chapters like slavery and includes a vast array of achievements in politics, science, arts, and social justice. The transition from a week to a full month in 1976 marked a meaningful expansion in the recognition of the importance of this history. It gave more people and institutions the opportunity to learn and celebrate Black heritage. It also emphasizes that celebrating Black history shouldn’t be confined to February alone—this history is inseparable from the fabric of our society every day. In my own experience, sharing Black history with friends and family during and beyond February has sparked important conversations about identity, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality. Preserving this knowledge is crucial because, as Woodson said, "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots." By actively engaging with Black history throughout the year—through books, documentaries, community events, or personal stories—we keep the spirit and legacy alive. This approach not only honors the past but empowers future generations to learn from it and continue making history.
