A brutally honest review of Lights Out

Okay let’s get one thing straight about this book. I listened to the audiobook which made the experience much more enjoyable. It’s cringey, it’s dark, there is virtually no character development, but it made me laugh. It was good background noise for the sims and schedule 1 and was an easy read.

First I’m rating it a little differently than normal since it was an audio book and I feel like read outloud ability is important to it.

Voice actors: 10/10 they did amazing and I really loved how they brought the characters to life.

Characters: 2/10. They get points purely because of how if they didn’t exist the story wouldn’t happen. Aly likes watching a masked man on social media and sends it to her hookup to try. He has moved on from her and shows it to his roommate Josh. Josh is the masked man and has been obsessed with her since he saw her the first time. His tragic backstory is his dad was a serial killer and he looks just like him. So his logical next step of not being his father is to break into a woman’s house and leave a mask. But don’t worry guys he’s hot, buys her cameras and loves her cat like his own. The characters get no consequences for anything, she threatens to fight a patient (granted he’s not a good guy) and gets away with it. When you think they are going to have conflict the roommate comes in and clears everything up. Like nothing happens to the characters at all.

Story: 1/10 genuinely I think the story doesn’t truly start until the last 20 chapters. Also she figures out it’s him immediately, and he still somehow manages to pull a one over on her. I’m so frustrated because it could have been amazing. I feel like everyone around her being like “ yes this is good” makes it worse somehow?

Spice:8/10 it’s good. Is it cringey? Yes but it’s good. Is it something I would ever do? No, you need safe words gosh darn it. Not having safe words is how bad things happen.

Humor: 6/10 it’s dated humor but some of it was funny.

Overall 4/10: okay listen. Would I ever read it? No. Will I ever relisten to the audio book? If nothing else comes up on Libby sure! It was cringey but charming at times. I just wish that they had actual consequences and couldn’t just magic them all away at the drop of a hat and I feel like that’s fair. I don’t feel compelled to read the next book but if it comes up on my fyp with a funny little part I might.
