Summer Camp for Slasher Victims

I think I might be done with slashers for a bit after this one because I was bored more than I was scared. I guessed the killer unfortunately early on and then just sat there waiting for the reveal only for it to lack any substance.

It starts with an 18 year old driving to be a counselor at a summer camp for kids who have gone through something traumatic. Something pops her tire and then she's stranded at a gas station with no way to call the camp, home or anyone.

Then we get our main character introductions that are all just final girls/guys. This was a fun game of placing who each character survived, a better slasher fan would be able to identify more.

We don't get our first slash until 60% of the way through. Which would be great if the reveal was better.

I talked to my boyfriend's brother who loves Matthew Mercer and critical role and he told me "Matthew was trying to write a bad slasher" which doesn't sound right because it feels like an Ernest attempt.

I gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars because the idea was cool I just can't handle how it was written.

... Read moreOkay, so after my initial thoughts on 'First Aid Kit' (or as I sometimes call it, 'Summer Camp for Slasher Victims' because that's exactly the vibe!), I wanted to dig a little deeper into why it didn't quite hit the mark for me, especially considering the cool premise. The idea of a summer camp specifically for kids who've already survived a slasher event? Genius! It promises those 'creative twists on Friday the 13th style summer camp slasher' that we all crave, right? I was picturing a deconstruction of classic tropes, maybe even some meta-commentary on the genre, something truly fresh for the slasher camp subgenre. Instead, it felt like it played it a bit too safe. My biggest disappointment was how predictable the killer was. When you're dealing with a cast of 'final girls' and 'final guys' – characters who are supposed to be genre-savvy survivors – you expect a truly mind-bending mystery, perhaps even a killer who is one of them, using their trauma against them. The book had some fun nods, with characters clearly surviving encounters with slashers like Jason, Michael Myers, and even a Bigfoot-esque creature, which was a clever touch from the OCR snippets. This 'fun game of trying to figure out who everyone survived from' was actually one of the highlights for me, but it wasn't enough to carry the entire narrative when the main plot felt so thin. For those looking for a true '90s summer camp slasher horror' vibe, this one felt a little off. The atmosphere just wasn't as thick with dread or nostalgia as I'd hoped. The slow burn could have worked if the reveal was spectacular, but waiting until 60% through for the first 'slash' when the killer is already obvious just made me antsy. I love a good slow-burn horror, but it needs to build genuine tension and misdirection, not just delay the inevitable. It really fell short compared to some of the iconic 'slasher camp' stories we know and love. I think the comment about Matthew Mercer 'trying to write a bad slasher' really stuck with me. If that was the intent, it's a bold move, but as a reader looking for genuine scares and surprises, it just didn't land. It made me wonder if the lack of substance in the reveal was intentional, but even so, it didn't make for a fulfilling read. It's a quick read, about 304 pages, and being a Kindle Unlimited book, it's easy to pick up without a huge commitment. If you're a die-hard slasher fan and just want to see a unique premise explored, even if imperfectly, it might scratch that itch. But don't go in expecting a masterclass in horror suspense or groundbreaking twists on the genre. It's more of a 'what if' scenario that doesn't quite fulfill its potential, leaving you wishing for the true terror that a camp for slasher victims should deliver. For a quick evening read on KU, it's okay, but it won't be joining my top horror recommendations anytime soon.
