Grooms I’ve done since graduation
It feels like just yesterday I was getting my diploma, but now I'm officially a dog groomer! Stepping out of grooming school and into the professional world has been such an adventure. I wanted to share a bit about what it's really like to start grooming pups right after graduation, beyond just the amazing transformations you see in pictures. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that every dog is truly unique. You can practice on all sorts of breeds in school, but nothing quite prepares you for the variety of personalities and coat types you encounter daily. For example, I recently groomed a super shaggy brown and white dog that needed a complete de-shed and trim – it was so satisfying to see them transformed! Then there are the playful ones who just want to give kisses, and others who need a little more patience and reassurance on the grooming table. Getting started, I found myself constantly revisiting my notes and practicing techniques. Building confidence with different breeds has been key. I've had the pleasure of working with everything from energetic huskies who love to chat, to calm Bernese Mountain Dogs who just want to nap. Each one teaches me something new. It's not just about the cut; it's about understanding dog behavior and making them feel safe and comfortable. Another aspect is the equipment. After graduation, I realized how important it is to invest in good quality tools. Things like a reliable set of clippers, sharp shears, and a sturdy purple leash make all the difference. I'm also always on the lookout for fun accessories, like the adorable pumpkin-patterned bandanas I used recently, or even little touches like a red hair tie for a cute topknot on a Bernedoodle. These small details can really make a groom special and show off the dog's personality. For anyone thinking of becoming a groomer or who has just graduated like me, my biggest advice is to keep learning! The industry is always evolving, and there are always new styles and techniques to master. Don't be afraid to ask for advice, watch tutorials, and attend workshops. Building a client base takes time and effort, but seeing a happy dog trot out of the salon with a fresh new look is the most rewarding feeling. Connecting with other groomers and pet professionals has also been incredibly helpful. Sometimes, it's just about sharing stories or getting tips on handling a particularly matted coat. Places like Pet Supplies Plus, where I sometimes pick up supplies, are also great resources for seeing what new products are out there. This journey since grooming graduation has been challenging but incredibly fulfilling. Every dog, whether it's a first-timer or a regular, brings its own set of joys and learning opportunities. I'm excited to see where my grooming career takes me next and continue making these wonderful furry friends look and feel their best!
