Why your Skincare Routine Might Not Be Working For You

Your skincare routine might not be the problem.

In Ayurveda, skin is influenced by three energies called doshas: Vatta, Pitta, Khapa. These energies affect dryness, oiliness, sensitivity, and breakouts.

Understanding your skin’s natural balance can help you choose skincare that actually supports your skin.

... Read moreFrom my personal experience exploring Ayurveda, I realized that typical skincare routines often fail because they don’t address the unique constitution of each person's skin. Ayurveda identifies three primary doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—that govern not only skin type but also how skin reacts to various external and internal factors. For instance, Vata skin tends to be dry and delicate and benefits immensely from rich, nourishing moisturizers and hydrating oils. On the other hand, Pitta skin, which is sensitive and prone to redness, responds well to calming, soothing ingredients like aloe vera and calendula that reduce inflammation. Kapha skin is oilier and can become congested, so lighter, balancing formulas that control oil production and prevent pore blockage work best. What I found particularly useful is that Ayurveda also highlights the importance of lifestyle factors such as digestion, stress, and internal balance. While topical skincare is important, if your digestion is off, or you're under chronic stress, your skin will reflect that imbalance. Improving internal health through diet and mindful practices like meditation and gentle exercise can significantly boost skin clarity and radiance. Incorporating Ayurvedic principles allowed me to personalize my routine rather than blindly following popular trends. This included identifying which dosha predominated my skin condition at the time and choosing products that balanced rather than irritated it. Through this holistic approach, I noticed fewer breakouts, reduced sensitivity, and an overall healthier glow. If your skincare isn’t working, consider exploring your dosha type and focus on harmonizing your internal and external regimen. This ancient wisdom could be the key to unlocking effortless, radiant skin that conventional skincare alone can rarely achieve.
