Fiber-rich foods to keep your guts happy
As anybody who has ever experienced constipation will tell you, you never know how important bowel movements are until you miss them. Enter fiber! Fiber also has the additional benefits of reducing cancer risks and keeping you feeling full for longer (making it easier to lose weight!). Here are three of my favorite fiber-rich grocery staples (and one easy recipe to use them all):
Oats ($4.39 for 42 oz from Target) - this isn’t the most fiber-rich food out there with 4 grams per 0.5 cup, but it’s incredibly versatile. You can use them in oatmeal, overnight oats, baked oats, etc. and can easily make them savory or sweet.
Chia seeds ($4.99 for 12 oz from Trader Joe’s) - very fiber-rich with 8 grams per 2 tbsp. Some of my favorite ways to use them are blended in smoothies, in overnights, and in granola.
Unroasted & unsalted sliced almonds ($3.49 for 8 oz) - a lot of benefits outside of fiber too, 4 grams per 0.25 cup. I usually use them in granola, but these are also great for baking!
Recipe: These easy overnight oats are what I eat almost daily for breakfast, and take less than 5 minutes to prep.
Ingredients:
2 tbsp oats
1 tbsp chia seeds
4 tbsp milk (of choice, I like to use nonfat)
Optional: little bit of honey/maple syrup
0.5 cup of yogurt of choice (I like Trader Joe’s strained extra thick yogurt for extra protein)
homemade granola (I like to use oats, chia seeds, almonds, and peanut butter to make mine but you can use whatever you’d like!)
I mix the oats, chia seeds, milk, and optional sweetener together, pop in the fridge overnight, and then add however much yogurt and granola in the morning. That’s it!
Let me know if you decide to try this recipe or any of the grocery staples above!
From personal experience, incorporating fiber-rich foods into your daily diet can make a significant difference in digestive health and overall well-being. Oats, for example, provide soluble fiber, which forms a gel-like substance in the gut that helps regulate bowel movements and stabilize blood sugar levels. Chia seeds, on the other hand, are an excellent source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, aiding in gut motility while also offering omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. The sliced almonds add a nice crunch and are packed with fiber and healthy fats, which support heart health. One tip when using these ingredients in overnight oats is to experiment with your milk and yogurt choices to adjust texture and protein content to your liking. Using strained Greek yogurt adds creaminess and a boost of protein, keeping you fuller for longer. You can also customize your granola or add fresh or frozen fruits such as berries or banana slices to enhance flavor and nutrient density. If you're new to fiber, increase your intake gradually and drink plenty of water to help your digestive system adjust. Fiber not only helps ease constipation but may also reduce risks of colorectal cancer and supports sustained weight management by promoting satiety. Overall, combining these fiber-rich groceries into simple recipes like overnight oats is a convenient and tasty way to keep your gut happy and your body nourished every day.
