Healthy snacks - soda edition!

I didn’t grow up drinking soda and actually really dislike the taste of most of the super popular sodas, but there are a lot of more recent soda brands that are making tastier flavors and are a lot healthier. I’ve liked Olipop for a few years now, but wanted to try a few different brands to see how they compare:

bloom pop: strawberry cream flavor

* 3g of sugar (3g added)

* 20 calories

* $2.39 from Target

* can taste both the strawberry and cream flavors pretty well, a little on the sickly sweet side (probably because of the flavor I chose) but nothing too overwhelming

* fairly simple ingredient list, sugar likely comes from stevia

* overall 10/10

olipop: crisp apple flavor

* 5g sugar (1g added); 6g fiber

* 40 calories

* $2.19 from Target

* super crisp apple flavor, very refreshing! really like it

* also a fairly simple ingredient list, fiber comes from plant-based ingredients like cassava root, sugar comes from stevia and fruit juices

* overall 10/10, increase in calories is worth it for the fiber in my opinion

poppi: orange flavor

* 5g sugar (3g added); 3g fiber

* 25 calories

* $2.19 from Target

* flavor wasn’t as strong as I expected it to be, still tasted pretty good though

* also fairly simple ingredient list, fiber comes from cassava root fiber, sugar comes from organic cane sugar and stevia

* overall 9/10, not quite as good as the others but could’ve just been the flavor and not sure I liked the fiber/sugar tradeoff

What are your favorite soda brands? Let me know and I’ll try them!

... Read moreOkay, so like many of you, I've been on a journey to ditch traditional sugary sodas without completely giving up that fizzy, refreshing experience. That's why I started exploring the world of "healthy" sodas, often called prebiotic sodas. It's not just about cutting calories or sugar; for me, it's about finding drinks that actually support my body, especially my gut health. When I see those prebiotic beverage cans in the store, I'm always curious to see if they can truly deliver on flavor and function. My initial dive into Olipop, Poppi, and Bloom Pop wasn't just a casual taste test; it was about finding genuine olipop soda alternative options that felt good to drink. You know that feeling when you crave something bubbly but don't want the sugar crash or artificial ingredients? That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. What I've noticed across these brands, and what makes them stand out, are the ingredients. They often boast low-calorie, low-sugar profiles, which is a huge win. But more importantly, many like Olipop and Poppi include prebiotics, often from sources like cassava root fiber. This isn't just filler; these fibers are food for the beneficial bacteria in your gut, which can contribute to better digestion and overall well-being. I've personally felt a difference in how my stomach feels when I regularly swap out my usual sparkling water for one of these. It's subtle, but noticeable. When it comes to picking a poppi alternative or deciding between olipop vs bloom pop, I've learned it's not just about the upfront taste. For instance, while Bloom Pop's strawberry cream was delightfully sweet, I also pay attention to the nutrition facts label – specifically the added sugars and fiber content. Olipop, with its higher fiber, always feels like a more substantial, gut-friendly choice for me, even with a few extra calories. The crisp apple flavored beverage from Olipop, for example, just feels incredibly refreshing and satisfying without being overly sweet. Poppi is another popular choice, and while its orange flavor was pleasant, I sometimes find myself wishing for a bit more punch or a higher fiber count to truly justify its "healthy" claim compared to the others. However, it's still miles better than a traditional soda, and I appreciate that it uses organic cane sugar alongside stevia for a more balanced sweetness. The orange flavored prebiotic beverage is definitely a step in the right direction. My advice if you're exploring these: Read the Labels: Don't just look at calories. Check total sugars, added sugars, and especially dietary fiber. The nutrition facts label is your best friend! Ingredient Transparency: Look for simple, recognizable ingredients. Plant-based fibers and natural sweeteners like stevia or fruit juices are good signs. Flavor Exploration: Don't dismiss a brand after just one flavor! My experience with Bloom Pop's strawberry cream was sweet, but their other flavors might be more to my liking. Same for Poppi; a different flavor might hit differently. Listen to Your Body: How do you feel after drinking it? Does it genuinely refresh you, or do you feel a sugar crash later? Ultimately, finding your go-to healthy soda is a personal journey. I'm still trying new ones all the time, but knowing what to look for on those prebiotic beverage cans has made it so much easier to make informed choices. What are your must-have healthy sodas? I'd love to hear your recommendations!
