Pronoun ( him

2024/12/3 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, let's be real – who else used to get totally confused by 'he' and 'him'? 🙋‍♀️ I know I did! For the longest time, I'd second-guess myself, especially in texts or emails. It felt like a subtle grammar trap, and I was always worried about sounding incorrect. But trust me, once you get the hang of it, it's actually pretty straightforward! The main thing to remember is the difference between a subject pronoun and an object pronoun. Think of it like this: the subject is the one doing the action in a sentence, and the object is the one receiving the action. 'He' is always a *subject pronoun*. This means 'he' is the doer. *He* went to the store. (He is doing the going) *He* loves pizza. (He is doing the loving) *He* is a great friend. (He is the subject of the sentence) 'Him' is always an *object pronoun*. This means 'him' is the receiver. I saw him at the park. (He received the seeing) She gave the book to *him*. (He received the book) That gift is for *him*. (He is the object of the preposition 'for') So, to answer the big question: Is 'him' a subject pronoun? Absolutely not! 'Him' can never be the one performing the action in a sentence. If you find yourself using 'him' as the subject, it's a red flag to switch it to 'he'. A super helpful trick I learned is to try replacing 'he' or 'him' with 'I' or 'me'. You wouldn't say 'Me went to the store,' right? You'd say 'I went to the store.' So, if 'I' fits, then 'he' is probably correct. Similarly, you wouldn't say 'She gave the book to I,' you'd say 'She gave the book to me.' If 'me' fits, then 'him' is likely correct. Let's look at a common tricky one: 'It was him.' This actually sounds natural to many, but grammatically, it should be 'It was he.' Why? Because 'it was' is a linking verb, and linking verbs connect the subject to a subject complement, which should also be in the subject case. So, 'he' is correct here. However, in casual speech, 'It was him' is widely accepted, but for formal writing, stick to 'It was he.' Another frequent error is with compound subjects or objects. For example, 'Me and him went to the concert.' Incorrect! You should say, 'He and I went to the concert.' (Again, test it: 'Me went to the concert' doesn't work, 'Him went to the concert' doesn't work, but 'I went to the concert' works, and 'He went to the concert' works.) Or, 'The teacher gave the assignment to John and I.' Also incorrect! It should be 'The teacher gave the assignment to John and me.' (Test: 'The teacher gave the assignment to I' doesn't work, but 'The teacher gave the assignment to me' works.) Mastering these little grammatical nuances truly boosts your confidence in writing and speaking. It might seem small, but clear communication makes a huge difference. Keep practicing, and soon you'll be a pronoun pro without even thinking twice!
