how we survived a messy wedding planning journey💍👰🏻‍♀️

We were engaged for a total of five years and what a journey it was! The world shut down for three of those years, our original wedding venue canceled our contract because of the pandemic, and to top it all off, my husband had jaw surgery, which added another two years to our engagement!

Wedding planning turned out to be quite the rollercoaster, but through it all, I learned to stay sane by focusing on what truly matters: us and not a picture perfect Pinterest wedding.

Teamwork made all the difference. I’m so grateful my husband really stepped up during the chaos and became my biggest support.

To keep things manageable, I prioritized our relationship first, got everything organized in one place, and once we locked in a venue, I committed just one hour a day to planning, sticking loosely to a timeline. That one hour a day kept the chaos at bay… mostly. 😂

And after everything, we made it to the finish line. Our wedding day was far from perfect, it was better. The wait was absolutely worth it!

... Read moreBuilding on my own experience, I wanted to dive deeper into some practical ways my partner and I really survived our 'messy' wedding planning journey. It wasn't just about the big setbacks like the pandemic, but also the everyday stresses that can make any wedding planning journey feel overwhelming and, yes, even lead to what some might call a 'messy marriage' if not handled with care during this intense period. First, let's talk about the nitty-gritty of organization, inspired by those endless hours of reviewing documents and filling up a binder. My 'one hour a day' rule was a lifesaver, but it only worked because I had a system. I created a master spreadsheet for our budget, guest list, and vendor contacts. This helped us track every dollar and every RSVP. We broke down tasks into small, manageable chunks. Instead of 'plan the wedding,' it became 'research florists for 15 minutes,' or 'send out 10 invitations.' This approach prevented decision fatigue and made our five-year engagement feel less daunting. Dealing with vendor issues was another huge hurdle. After our first venue canceled, we learned to scrutinize contracts. My advice? Get everything in writing, ask about cancellation policies, and don't be afraid to read the fine print. We also learned the importance of clear communication with vendors. For example, when we picked our new venue, a beautiful vineyard, we made sure to have weekly check-ins with their coordinator. This proactive approach saved us a lot of stress. And what about keeping the relationship strong amidst all this pressure? That's where the 'messy marriage' query really hits home for couples during planning. It's easy for wedding talk to consume everything. We made a conscious effort to have 'no wedding talk' zones, like during date nights. We also divided tasks based on our strengths – my husband took charge of music and logistics, while I focused on aesthetics and guest communication. Teamwork truly made the dream work, and it helped us avoid unnecessary arguments. Remember, the wedding is just one day; your marriage is forever. Prioritizing respect and understanding through the planning ups and downs is crucial. If you're facing a long engagement like ours, embrace it! It gives you time to save, to reconsider what's truly important, and to mature as a couple. We actually found joy in spreading out the planning process. Don't feel pressured to rush. Instead, use the extra time to refine your vision, secure your dream vendors, and most importantly, grow closer as a couple. Our journey proved that even with countless detours, the destination—our wedding day—was more meaningful because of the path we took together.
