My Backpack

This is my backpack as a junior in college. It’s The North Face Recon bag. I bought it last summer at REI.

I have always loved keychains, so obviously I have far too many on my bag. First, we have the keychains with my dog’s names on them from Niagara Falls. Then, I have my butterfly/moth Squishmallow charm. I also have the Jellycat coffee cup bag charm. Finally, I have some of the Bath and Body Works Butterfly scented hand sanitizer.

But beyond making it cute, having the right essentials inside can make all the difference during a busy semester. As a junior in college, I've definitely learned what items are truly non-negotiable for navigating campus life efficiently. First off, let's talk academic essentials. Your laptop or tablet is probably your most important tool, so a well-padded sleeve within your backpack is crucial. Don't forget its charger! There's nothing worse than your battery dying mid-lecture. I always carry a couple of notebooks and a good set of pens and highlighters for jotting down notes or marking up readings. A small planner or agenda is also a lifesaver for keeping track of assignments and deadlines. Some students also find a portable hard drive useful for backing up important files. Next up, tech accessories! Besides your laptop charger, a portable power bank for your phone is an absolute must. You'll be using your phone for everything from navigation to staying in touch with friends, and outlets aren't always available when you need them. Good quality headphones are also essential for focused study sessions in noisy libraries or for enjoying your commute. A small USB drive can still come in handy for quick file transfers or printing at library stations. Personal care and comfort items are often overlooked but incredibly important. While I love my Bath & Body Works hand sanitizer for its scent, any sanitizer is a lifesaver for staying germ-free, especially during cold and flu season. A good lip balm, pain relievers (like ibuprofen), and a few tissues are always in my bag. Staying hydrated is key, so a reusable water bottle is a daily companion. And let's be real, snacks are essential for those long gaps between meals or during intense study blocks! Think granola bars, fruit, or nuts. Finally, don't forget some practical accessories that can make your day smoother. Your student ID and any necessary transit passes should be easily accessible. A small wallet with some cash for emergencies is also a smart idea. Think about the overall construction of your backpack too – durable zippers, comfortable shoulder straps, and multiple compartments for organization truly elevate a backpack from just a bag to an essential college companion. My North Face Recon, for example, has been fantastic because it's so sturdy and has great organizational pockets. Ensuring your backpack can hold all these necessities comfortably and securely is just as important as the items themselves!
