Wow, Unpub Festival 2026 in Maryland was an absolute blast! As someone who loves discovering new tabletop games, this event is quickly becoming a highlight of my year. The best part? It's completely free for playtesters! Getting to be among the first to try out brand-new prototype games, some still in their early stages, is such a unique experience. I must have played at least five different games, providing feedback directly to the creators. It's so rewarding to know your thoughts might help shape the next big hit. From strategic Eurogames to lighthearted party games, the variety was impressive. I even spotted some familiar titles like 'Castle Panic' and 'Wild Gardens' being showcased, giving a glimpse into the kind of quality games that often emerge from these early stages. Beyond the playtesting, the atmosphere at Unpub is incredibly welcoming. Everyone, from seasoned designers to first-time attendees, is there because of a shared passion for games. It’s a great opportunity to connect with fellow gamers and even get a peek behind the curtain of game development. And let's talk about the raffles! This year, they had some truly unique prizes. My favorite was the Unpub-themed clickers – those colorful keycaps with character designs were super cool, and I really hoped to win one! It’s a testament to the organizers that they put so much thought into making the event special. I also noticed shelves stacked with various board games for a charity raffle, which is always a nice touch, knowing you're contributing to a good cause while having a chance to win something awesome. One of the booths that really caught my eye was showcasing personalized fidget toys. They had a banner detailing customization options like artworks, sounds, feels, base sizes, and even colors. It was fascinating to see tables displaying components for building these unique fidget toys, alongside colorful, character-themed tops. It just goes to show the diverse creativity present at Unpub, extending beyond just board games to other fun, interactive items.
