Bound by Death is a slow burn romance and for me on the very low end of the spice index. The story line follows the MFC who is a Fae and the MMC who is the Prince of the Underworld. To me, it felt like this was a Hades and Persephone retelling. However the story was not solely based around Greek mythology. This book had a couple twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting which made me eager to keep reading. The book has Arranged Marriages, forced proximity, and a couple other things. I will say this wasn’t necessarily my favorite to read but it was a good read.
... Read moreOkay, so I just wanted to share a bit more about my experience with 'Bound By Death' because while the review covers the basics, there's always more to unpack, right? Especially when you dive into a book that gives off major Hades and Persephone vibes, even if it's not a direct retelling.
What really hooks me about the Hades and Persephone trope, and what I felt glimpses of in Jes Drew's story, is that undeniable pull between opposites. You have the dark, powerful ruler of an underworld realm – in this case, the Prince – and a character from a more vibrant, often light-associated world, like the Fae MFC. The tension, the forbidden romance, the idea of finding light in darkness, or perhaps even embracing the darkness within oneself, is just so compelling. The book's cover, with its striking red and gold hues and those intriguing blindfolded figures, really sets that dramatic, slightly mysterious tone right from the start. You know you're in for something with high stakes.
The "slow burn romance" aspect was definitely present here. If you're someone who loves the build-up, the anticipation, and the gradual unfolding of feelings rather than instant declarations, this book will be right up your alley. Sometimes, it felt very slow, which is why I landed on 3.5 stars, but that's a personal preference! For others, that deliberate pacing can make the eventual connection feel incredibly earned. It’s not about immediate gratification; it’s about savoring every glance, every hesitant touch, every unspoken word.
And let's talk about the tropes: arranged marriages and forced proximity. Oh, how I love a good forced proximity scenario! There's just something about characters being thrown together against their will, having to navigate shared spaces and escalating emotions, that creates such fantastic internal and external conflict. When you add an arranged marriage into the mix, the stakes are even higher. It's not just about two people falling in love; it's about destiny, duty, and defying expectations. The author did a great job weaving these elements into the narrative, creating those unexpected twists that kept me turning pages. I wasn't always sure where the story was headed, and that's a huge plus for me.
For readers who are specifically looking for a low-spice romance, this is a solid recommendation on Kindle Unlimited. It focuses more on emotional depth and plot development than explicit scenes, which can be a breath of fresh air if you're not in the mood for super steamy reads. It's about the connection, the world-building, and the journey of the characters.
So, if you're a fan of fantasy romance, especially tales involving powerful underworld figures, Fae, and a good dose of emotional tension with a slower pace, definitely check out 'Bound By Death'. It's a great pick for anyone who enjoys exploring complex relationships within richly imagined mythical settings, much like the allure of those classic underworld lovers stories.
