10 things to get rid of in 2026: Nursing

1/13 Edited to

... Read moreAs a nurse, I've found that the profession comes with challenges that can sometimes take a toll on mental and physical health. Reflecting on the need to improve wellbeing, here are some insights that build upon the idea of shedding unhelpful habits and stressors in nursing. Many nurses cling to old NCLEX notes or certifications long past their prime value, but holding onto these can prevent us from fully embracing new opportunities. It’s empowering to update our skills and certifications regularly, focusing on what truly benefits our career growth and patient care capabilities. Unit group chats, while valuable for communication, can sometimes add unnecessary stress. Constant notifications and negative dialogues may increase anxiety, so setting boundaries or muting chats during off-hours can provide needed mental space. Extra shifts accepted out of guilt or peer pressure only compound burnout risks. Learning to say no without guilt is essential; your health and rest directly impact patient safety and job performance. Supernurse expectations, such as pushing through pain or exhaustion, are unrealistic and harmful. Recognizing that nurses are human with physical limits encourages self-compassion and better self-care. Old scrubs or jackets that no longer fit or represent you should be replaced or donated. Wearing comfortable, well-fitting attire that boosts confidence can improve daily morale. Break room food offered out of obligation but not enjoyed can contribute to unhealthy eating habits. Bringing your own nutritious meals promotes physical wellness and energy. Career paths chosen out of fear rather than alignment with your passions can lead to job dissatisfaction. Reflecting on goals and values helps realign your career trajectory toward fulfillment. Lastly, professional silence on issues that affect your peace shouldn’t be the norm. Finding constructive ways to voice concerns or seek support leads to healthier work environments. Letting go of these things in 2026 creates room for light to shine—taking up space with confidence and prioritizing mental health in the nursing journey.
