Dance Improv! *on concrete*😳

For me, it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, seeing that beautiful sunset, and just feeling the urge to move. Dancing on concrete definitely isn't for everyone, and it comes with its own set of challenges, but I found it incredibly liberating and inspiring. First off, let's talk about the elephant in the room: the hard surface. Yes, concrete is unforgiving. It’s a completely different sensation than a sprung studio floor or even grass. My joints definitely felt the impact more, especially during jumps or heavier landings. It really forces you to be mindful of your weight distribution and how you move your feet. Choose Your Footwear Wisely: I wore my regular dance sneakers, which offered some cushioning. Barefoot dancing on concrete is probably best avoided unless you're incredibly skilled and careful, as splinters or scrapes are a real risk. Look for shoes with good shock absorption if you're planning regular sessions. Scout Your Spot: Before you even start moving, take a good look at the concrete surface. Are there cracks, loose pebbles, or uneven patches? Clear away any debris that could cause a trip or fall. Safety first! Listen to Your Body: This is perhaps the most crucial dance improv tip, regardless of the surface. On concrete, it's even more vital. If something hurts, stop. Modify your movements. Avoid high-impact jumps or quick turns if your body isn't feeling up to it. Be kind to your knees and ankles! Let the Environment Inspire You: Don’t try to replicate your studio routine.
