A great start to this painting

Starting a new oil painting, especially one that evokes a feeling of 'home heaven,' is such a joyful process! When it comes to the actual painting, I usually start with the background, establishing the sky and distant elements first. This is where my 'cloud factory' comes into play! Building up those atmospheric clouds, deciding if they're soft and fluffy or dramatic and stormy, really sets the stage. Then, I block in the main shapes of the house, focusing on accuracy in proportion and perspective. It's surprisingly easy to get a window or a roofline slightly off, which can throw the whole painting out of whack! Choosing the right color palette is another exciting step. For a cozy house, I lean towards warm tones for the walls, perhaps a rich ochre or a soft terracotta, contrasted with cooler greens for surrounding foliage or blues for the sky. I love experimenting with how different colors interact to create depth and interest. Adding details comes last – the texture of the brick, the gleam in a windowpane, the subtle variations in the roof tiles.
