Dirt and water build up
(Not my house, this was a rental for a family member.)
Another part of the rental clean. Lots of dirt build up. I cleaned with Zep tub cleaner.
Okay, so you saw my rental tub transformation – from a cringe-worthy dirty bathtub with those stubborn brown and yellow stains to sparkling white! If you're wondering how to achieve that spotless and shiny surface, especially when dealing with heavy dirt and water build-up, let me share my full routine, focusing on how I really get the most out of my sponge and cleaning solution. First things first, gather your tools. You'll need a good quality sponge (I often use one with a scrubby side and a soft side), your chosen cleaning solution (like Zep tub cleaner, which works wonders for foaming!), and some gloves. Always good to protect your hands! Pre-rinse (Optional but helpful): A quick rinse with hot water helps loosen some surface grime and preps the tub for the cleaner. This also helps the cleaning solution spread better, making your job easier. Apply the Cleaner & Let it Foam: Spray your Zep tub cleaner liberally over the entire dirty surface, especially on those areas with heavy dirt and water build-up. Let it sit for a few minutes. This is where the magic of the foam starts to happen! The foam helps lift the grime without you having to scrub immediately. I love seeing the cleaning solution start to work its way into the stains, creating that satisfying foam and residue as it penetrates the dirt. The Sponge Technique: Now for the scrubbing! Take your sponge. I usually start with the soft side to spread the cleaning solution and gently loosen surface dirt without scratching. For those tough brown and yellow stains, I switch to the scrubbier side. Apply circular motions, focusing on one small section at a time. Don't be afraid to put a little elbow grease into it, especially on the grout lines or around the drain where residue loves to cling. You'll see the dirty foam and residue start to come up, indicating the grime is lifting. Dealing with Stubborn Stains: For truly set-in dirt or mold, you might need to reapply a little more cleaner and let it sit for another 5-10 minutes. Sometimes, a stiff-bristled brush (like the one that came with a yellow bottle of cleaning product I have) can be more effective than a sponge for really ingrained spots, but for general build-up, the sponge is usually enough to get that clean, sparkling white bathtub result. Rinse Thoroughly: This is crucial! Once you've scrubbed every inch, rinse the tub thoroughly with clean water. I usually use the showerhead for this, making sure all the cleaning solution and lifted grime go down the drain. You'll literally see the transformation as the water washes away the dirt, revealing a truly clean, sparkling white bathtub. Final Wipe Down & Polish: For that extra shine and to prevent water spots, give the tub a quick wipe down with a clean, dry cloth or microfiber towel. This leaves your tub looking truly spotless and shiny. It's so satisfying to see the final result, just like in my before-and-after photos! Maintaining Your Sparkle: To keep your tub from getting back to that 'before' state, try to do a quick spray-and-wipe with a daily shower cleaner after each use, or at least once a week. This prevents dirt and water build-up from becoming a massive project again. Trust me, a little maintenance goes a long way in keeping your bathroom looking fresh! It saves you from those big deep cleans like the one I just did on the rental. It’s amazing what a little dedication and the right tools can do. Using a good scrubbing sponge and letting your foaming cleaner do its work can truly transform even the dirtiest bathtub. Happy cleaning, everyone!

I love Zep it cuts through the soap scum and grime build up.
