It’s tempting to maintain some connection, hoping for a future reconciliation or out of familiarity. However, one crucial aspect to consider is how difficult it can be to see your ex thriving with someone else while you’re still emotionally entangled. This can create ongoing inner conflict and prevent true healing. For many, the idea of being friendlier with an ex is linked to avoidant attachment patterns, which can make it seem easier to stay connected superficially instead of fully processing the breakup. Yet, this approach often prolongs emotional tension rather than brings closure. Adopting a period of no contact can help reset boundaries and allow both parties to move on healthily. Another factor to weigh is the fairness to yourself. Staying friends may mean you constantly face reminders of what’s no longer attainable, putting your emotional well-being at risk. Being honest with yourself about whether you’re ready to see them with someone new and genuinely just be friends without expectations is vital. Remember, the breakup phase involves grieving not just the loss of a partner but also the loss of friendship as it was. Even though it might feel harsh, completely moving on before attempting any kind of friendship often leads to healthier, more stable interactions in the long term. Ultimately, prioritizing your mental health and personal growth helps you build better relationships going forward, whether old flame or new.
