Spring cleaning: TRAPS & FILTERS

1. Clean Filters*

Check the dishwasher drain filter. The dishwasher filter traps food scraps and debris that can clog the drain and hinder washing performance. Consult your dishwasher's manual to locate the filter, which is usually near the bottom of the dishwasher tub. Typically, you can remove it by hand and rinse it with clean water.

Clean the clothes dryer lint trap. This is essential for fire safety and drying efficiency. After every load, remove the lint trap, usually located near the dryer door, and clean out the lint with your fingers or a vacuum cleaner.

Replace air filters. Dirty air filters can restrict airflow and reduce the efficiency of your heating and cooling system. How often you need to replace them depends on your home environment and the type of filter you have. Generally, most air filters need to be replaced every 1-3 months.

Order new water filters. Water filters remove impurities from your water supply. Depending on the type of filter you have, you may need to replace it every 6 months to a year.

Here are some additional tips:

🖊️ Label the filters with replacement dates.

This will help you keep track of when to replace them.

📦 Consider subscribing to a water filter replacement service.

This can help ensure you never run out of filters.

2. Clean Baseboards:

Vacuum with a brush attachment is a great way to loosen and remove dust and cobwebs that tend to gather on baseboards.

Microfiber cloths are fantastic for cleaning because they trap dust and dirt effectively. Using a damp cloth ensures you can wipe away any remaining dust and grime.

An all-purpose cleaner is a versatile option for baseboards, as long as it's safe for the material they're made of (usually wood or vinyl).

Here are some additional tips for cleaning baseboards:

Work in Sections: Clean the baseboards in small sections, so the cleaning solution doesn't dry on the surface.

Rinse and Dry the Cloth: Frequently rinse your microfiber cloth to remove collected dirt and ensure effective cleaning. You can also have a separate dry cloth for wiping after cleaning with the solution.

Target Stubborn Marks: For scuff marks or stuck-on dirt, you might need a slightly abrasive sponge or a melamine sponge (Magic Eraser) with a bit more cleaning solution.

Dry Completely: Make sure the baseboards are dry after cleaning to prevent moisture damage, especially near wood floors.

*📒Notes: For both Dishwasher and Dryer:

Consult your owner's manual: The manual will provide specific instructions on where the filters are located and how to clean them properly. Some models may have additional filters that require cleaning.

Maintaining these crucial components not only boosts the efficiency of your appliances but also promotes safety in your home. Start with your dishwasher by removing and cleaning the drain filter to ensure food scraps and debris don't accumulate, which could lead to clogs and poor washing performance. Similarly, remember to clean your clothes dryer lint trap after each use to prevent fire hazards and enhance drying efficiency. In addition to these tasks, don't forget to replace your HVAC air filters regularly, typically every 1-3 months depending on your living space. Clean filters improve air quality and ensure your heating and cooling system operates efficiently. For water filters, consider a replacement schedule every 6-12 months to maintain clean drinking water. When tackling dust, pay attention to baseboards. Using a vacuum with a brush attachment, you can easily lift dust and cobwebs. A microfiber cloth dampened with an all-purpose cleaner is ideal for ensuring every surface is clean and pollen-free, which is especially important during allergy season. To streamline your cleaning process, label filters with replacement dates to stay on top of upkeep, and consider subscribing to filter replacement services to keep your household running smoothly. By integrating these habits into your spring cleaning routine, you’ll not only create a more pleasant living environment but also prolong the lifespan of your appliances.
