Expanding The Garden 🌱
We recently added 3 more raised beds to our garden, bringing the total to 13, with space for one more. The layout has shifted a bit from our original plan, but we’re really happy with the new configuration. It flows better and makes the most of our space.
It’s wild to look back and realize this all started in 2015 with just a single box and buckets. We expanded to 4 beds a few years ago, and now we’ve more than tripled that! With this many beds, we’re aiming to grow enough food to feed our family for an entire year.
The boxes are built using cedar fence pickets. The cost to build one box is under $25. We used cardboard for weed suppression, which is free, and will be laying down stone in the walkways to keep things tidy.
It’s a big job, but it’s exciting to see everything come together!
Expanding a garden can be a rewarding experience, providing not only fresh produce but also a creative outlet. Raised bed gardening is especially popular as it allows for better soil control and improved drainage. When building raised beds, consider using rot-resistant materials like cedar, which can last for many years. The addition of cardboard for weed suppression is a cost-effective method that enhances soil health as it decomposes. To maximize space, plan your garden layout thoughtfully, grouping plants with similar sunlight and watering needs. Gardening is not just about planting; it involves regular maintenance, including watering, weeding, and monitoring for pests. Engaging with other gardening enthusiasts through forums and sharing experiences can provide inspiration and practical advice. Whether you are a novice or an experienced gardener, expanding your garden can lead to sustainable living and a deeper connection with nature.
