... Read moreHey Lemon8 fam! Building an original character (OC) from scratch is one of my favorite creative journeys, and it's so much more than just sketching a cool design. I often get asked, 'Why even make OCs?' For me, it's about the pure joy of storytelling and bringing a brand new personality to life, a space where my imagination can run wild! OCs allow us to explore themes, emotions, and narratives that might not fit into existing universes, or simply to express a piece of ourselves. They're a fantastic way to develop your artistic and writing skills, connect with other creators, and contribute to a vibrant community.
So, how do we come up with truly unique OC ideas that stand out? It often starts with a spark. For my character with the dark curly hair and bunny ears, I started thinking about contrasts. What if she has a sweet, innocent look with her pink nose and a love for conversation heart candies, but a surprisingly mischievous personality? Or perhaps her vibrant, colorful striped top and skirt, along with those fun striped arm warmers, hint at a life lived against the norm. Don't be afraid to mix and match concepts! You could try combining two unrelated things, like a baker who's also a secret spy, or a shy librarian with a passion for extreme sports. Sometimes, just looking at everyday objects or thinking about an interesting job can be the catalyst for a whole new character concept. Drawing inspiration from myths, history, or even personal experiences can also lead to incredibly original creations.
Once you have a basic concept, diving into original character lore is where they truly come alive. Lore is the backbone of your OC – their history, their world, their motivations. When crafting lore, I love to ask myself a series of 'what if' and 'why' questions. For instance, why does my character carry a pink heart purse? Is it purely aesthetic, or does it hold something significant to her past? Why is her background filled with heart shapes and carrots? Does she come from a fantastical carrot patch, or is it a symbol of her deep love for nature and all things cute? These small details can unravel a whole universe!
Think about these aspects to build a rich history:
Origin Story: Where did they come from? Were they born, created, or discovered? What are their family roots?
Key Life Events: What significant moments shaped them? A triumph, a tragedy, a pivotal meeting? How did these events influence their current personality?
Personality & Motivations: What drives them? What are their biggest fears and deepest desires? How does their appearance, like those distinctive bunny ears, influence their interactions with the world?
Relationships: Who are the important people (or creatures!) in their life? Friends, family, rivals? How do these relationships define them?
World & Culture: What kind of world do they inhabit? Is it dystopian, fantasy, modern? How does their culture influence them and their choices?
Developing lore is an iterative process. You don't have to get it perfect all at once. Start with a few core ideas, then let them evolve as you spend more time with your character. Sometimes, the visual cues, like the detail of her holding that pink heart purse or the specific pattern of her colorful striped outfit, can spark entire narratives. Sharing your OC with a creative community, like here on Lemon8, is also incredibly helpful for getting fresh perspectives and inspiring new ideas for names and backstories. It's all about making your character feel real and giving them a compelling story to tell!
