Here’s how to tell if your baby is actually too cold:

🥶 Check the chest or back, not hands and feet.

Cool fingers are normal. The core should feel warm.

🥶 Look at their skin tone. Pale or slightly mottled skin can mean they’re conserving heat.

🥶 Notice unusual fussiness. Trouble settling or waking more than usual may signal discomfort.

🥶 Shivering in older babies. Newborns rarely shiver. If an older baby is shivering, they may be cold.

Now, how to keep baby comfortably warm (without overdoing it):

👍 Add one breathable layer more than you’re wearing

👍 Keep the room between 68–72°F

👍 Use a wearable sleep sack instead of loose blankets

Instead, checking the warmth of their chest or back gives a more accurate indication of their core warmth. Sometimes, the baby’s skin tone is an overlooked clue. When my baby’s skin looked pale or slightly blotchy, it often meant she was trying to conserve heat, signaling the need to add a layer or adjust the room temperature. Additionally, fussiness or trouble settling can often be traced back to being too cold, so observing behaviors in combination with physical checks is key. Older babies shivering was a new sign I learned to watch for – newborns rarely shiver, so if an older infant shivers, it’s a clear sign they’re chilly and need to be warmed carefully. In terms of practical steps, I always opt for breathable layers—adding one more layer than what I’m comfortable in—to avoid overheating, which is just as risky. Maintaining the room between 68 and 72°F has been my go-to guideline, as it strikes a good balance between comfortable warmth and safe sleeping conditions. Using wearable sleep sacks instead of loose blankets also provides warmth without the risk of the baby overheating or suffocating. This has been especially helpful during winter storms or very cold nights, like when blizzard warnings are issued. One tip from personal experience: always be mindful of signs of overheating, such as sweating or flushed cheeks, and adjust layers accordingly. Overheating increases SIDS risk, so keeping babies comfortably snug but never sweaty is essential. Ultimately, each baby is unique, and learning their normal warmth cues and behaviors helps parents respond confidently and keep their little ones safe and cozy throughout the cold nights.
