Baked mashed potatoes are a classic comfort food that never fails to please. One important tip I've learned is to choose the right type of potato: starchy varieties like Russets yield fluffy mashed potatoes that absorb the butter and cream well. When boiling the potatoes, be sure not to overcook them to avoid a watery mash. Adding seasonings such as garlic powder, paprika, or fresh herbs can elevate the flavor profile significantly. In my experience, mixing the boiled potatoes with butter first before gradually adding heavy cream helps achieve a creamy, rich texture without making the mash too runny. For cheese, I love using Gouda, but sharp cheddar or mozzarella can also add delightful melting properties and taste. Shredding the cheese finely ensures it melts evenly in the oven during the 15-20 minute bake at 350°F. This recipe is versatile and a real crowd-pleaser. Try topping the baked mashed potatoes with crispy bacon bits, chives, or even a sprinkle of parmesan for extra indulgence. Pairing this dish with meatloaf and sweet peas, like I did, makes for a comforting and balanced dinner. The cheese melts into a golden bubbly crust that adds fantastic texture and flavor. Give this recipe a try for your next family dinner or holiday meal – it’s simple, satisfying, and fits right into any occasion where you want a delicious potato side dish.
