Easy DIY bookmark ideas

Sharing with you some simple bookmarks that I have created that you can make just in about 30 minutes.

What you need:

↘️

1. Any paper lying here and there, that suits the size of the bookmark you want.

↘️

2. Idea first: Apply one layer of color as background and add small flowers in the for-front

↘️

3. Draw a single cute object multiple times, like the honeybee, cat faces, potted plants with a little variation – color, size, direction, anything that you can think of.

Find me on Instagram @code_n_color. I appreciate your support from the bottom of my heart

... Read moreHey fellow bookworms! Who else loves adding a personal touch to their reading experience? I've always found that a unique bookmark makes turning pages even more special. The best part? You don't need to be an expert artist to create something beautiful. I've been experimenting with super easy DIY bookmarks, and I wanted to share some expanded tips that have really helped me make them pop! First off, let's talk materials beyond just 'any paper.' While regular paper works, I've found that slightly thicker cardstock gives your bookmarks a much more professional feel and better durability. If you want to get fancy, watercolor paper is fantastic for creating those lovely soft backgrounds – think gentle pinks or sunny yellows like the ones I've tried, perfect for a calming 'relax!' themed bookmark. Even upcycled materials, like pretty patterned gift wrap or pages from an old, discarded book, can add a unique vintage charm. Now for the fun part: the designs! The original idea of applying a base color and then adding small elements is brilliant. For backgrounds, try a simple wash of watercolor or even just gently blend a couple of pastel markers for an aesthetic gradient. Then, unleash your creativity with those cute focal points! I absolutely adore the idea of drawing simple objects multiple times with variations. For my plant-themed bookmarks, I've had so much fun with different potted plants – some with lush green foliage, others with tiny orange or white flowers. You can even draw little red squares with flower outlines inside for a minimalist yet charming look. Imagining a tiny succulent or a trailing ivy on your bookmark brings such a peaceful vibe to your reading. And for animal lovers, the honeybees and cat faces are just the beginning! I've also done little fluffy clouds, elegant crescent moons (especially pretty on a dark blue or pink background!), or even tiny birds. The trick is to keep them simple. Use a fine-tip marker for outlines and then fill in with your favorite colors. Don't be afraid to vary the size, direction, or color of each repetition – it adds so much character! For instance, a series of cheerful yellow and black honeybees buzzing across your bookmark or a trio of mischievous cat faces in orange, red, and purple, each with its own tiny expression, makes it truly unique. Want to make your designs truly stand out? After your base colors and main objects are dry, go back with a fine black pen to add crisp outlines. This really defines your drawings and gives them a polished look. You can also add tiny details like dots, stars, or even a subtle shimmer with a glitter pen. To make your DIY bookmarks last longer, a quick hack is to laminate them! You can use self-adhesive laminating sheets or even clear packing tape for a budget-friendly option. This protects them from wear and tear, especially if you're a heavy reader like me. And if you want to add an extra touch of elegance, punch a hole at the top and thread a pretty ribbon or a small tassel through it. It’s amazing how much a little ribbon can elevate the whole design! Creating these bookmarks isn't just about saving money; it's about the joy of making something with your own hands and infusing a bit of your personality into your everyday items. They also make incredibly thoughtful and personalized gifts for fellow book lovers. So grab some paper, your favorite pens, and let your imagination run wild. Happy crafting!
