Attending NDC Sydney 2026 was eye-opening for me, especially with the strong emphasis on how AI is reshaping software development workflows. One of the major themes was treating AI as a helpful tool rather than a replacement—machine learning assists in boilerplate code and routine tasks but relies heavily on developer judgment. The concept of ownership resonated deeply: "You Own the Code" means developers remain accountable for architecture and quality. Using tools like Octopus Deploy and Dovetail, teams can automate deployment but must continue reviewing and understanding every change. This balance helps avoid over-reliance on automation without scrutiny. Another highlight was the actionable advice for juniors and seniors. Juniors are encouraged to "ask Copilot first" to get unstuck quickly, while seniors are urged to delegate tedious tasks and focus on mentorship. Creating safe spaces for questions and celebrating curiosity nurtures knowledge-sharing and psychological safety. Burnout prevention was also a central discussion point. Speakers underscored the importance of workload delegation and realistic expectations. Starting small—asking one question or assigning one delegated task—can foster a better team culture and protect mental health. Overall, the conference inspired me to prioritize sustainable practices and continuous learning. It’s clear that embracing AI, while maintaining human oversight and empathy, will lead to more innovative and resilient software development teams.
