During my visit to Pigeon Key, one of the things I appreciated most was the unique way to reach the island. You can either take the short, scenic train ride, which provides a quick and relaxing approach, or challenge yourself by walking or biking the 2.2-mile stretch across the Old Seven Mile Bridge. This bridge offers breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding islands, making the journey as memorable as the destination. Once on the island, I joined a guided historic tour that vividly shared stories of the hardworking railroad men who once called Pigeon Key home during the construction of the Key West Extension. Learning about this National Historic Landmark’s past adds a meaningful layer to your visit. For nature lovers, Pigeon Key offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling in its clear waters, where you can see a variety of marine life. A particularly unique experience was visiting the saltwater pool for the shark feeding, where I spotted impressive Goliath groupers and other fascinating fish species. It’s a must-see for wildlife enthusiasts. Don’t forget to bring your fishing gear if you want to cast a line or simply relax by the beachfront. With less crowded beaches compared to other Florida Keys spots, Pigeon Key provides a peaceful retreat to unwind. Overall, the combination of history, adventure, and natural beauty makes Pigeon Key a standout attraction for anyone exploring Marathon, Florida.
