AI vs. My Career: The Real Talk

I realized my "deep chats" with my son were starting to sound like lectures. To him, it was just noise. To me, it was watching the ground shift under my career.

I had to stop being a "futurist" and start being a teammate. When I changed my words, he finally started to see the stakes. 🛡️✨

✨ THE "PIVOT" GUIDE: 5 SWAPS

1️⃣ Instead of: "AI is going to change everything about my industry by this year."

👉 Try: "I’m studying this now so I can stay indispensable and keep our family's income stable. I want to make sure I can keep supporting you."

2️⃣ Instead of: "You really need to start learning these tools or you'll be left behind."

👉 Try: "I’m 'future-proofing' my career so I can hit our financial goals for your graduation. Have you noticed any ways your friends are using this?"

3️⃣ Instead of: "Did you see this new update? It’s incredible what it can do now."

👉 Try: "I’m feeling a bit of pressure at work to keep up. Can I get your 'Gen Z' gut reaction on a project I’m working on?"

4️⃣ Instead of: "If I don't master AI, I might lose my job and we'll have no money."

👉 Try: "I want us to be a team on this. If my job shifts, we might need to look at our budget together. I’m working hard to make sure that doesn't happen."

5️⃣ Instead of: "You’re being naive if you think your future career is safe from this."

👉 Try: "I’m actually a little nervous about how fast things are moving. It helps me feel better to talk through it with you—you have a fresh perspective I don't."

The Goal? 💡

Move from being a professor to being a partner. When they see the why, they stop rolling their eyes and start leaning in. 🤝❤️

... Read moreNavigating career changes in the age of AI can feel daunting, especially when trying to engage younger family members in the conversation. I’ve found that framing the discussion around teamwork rather than top-down instruction dramatically changes the dynamics for the better. For example, rather than warning about losing jobs due to AI, sharing your personal commitment to learning and adapting makes the conversation relatable. It’s about saying, "This is my job, and it’s my responsibility to stay ahead, not just for me but for us." This approach encourages empathy and cooperation. In my experience, inviting input from younger generations taps into their fresh perspective and familiarity with technology, creating a two-way learning street. Asking for their 'Gen Z gut reaction' or how their peers use AI tools often leads to surprising insights that can ease the pressure of staying relevant. Moreover, treating AI skills as essential work tools—not hobbies—is key. This mindset shift helps frame continuous learning as a professional necessity and shared goal rather than a fearful obligation. It also opens the door for joint problem-solving, such as reviewing budgets if job roles shift—reinforcing that family resilience is a collective effort. Ultimately, the goal is to move from lecturing about future threats to partnering on solutions. When children understand the stakes and feel included, their engagement grows, and anxiety about AI’s impact lessens. This real-life strategy transforms what could be stressful talks into opportunities for bonding and mutual support.
