Senior Shoot in PNW Botanical Garden

I’m so excited to share more about my journey into capturing beautiful senior portraits, especially focusing on that dreamy soft aesthetic! While I'm always learning, I've picked up a few things that really help achieve this look, especially when shooting in stunning locations like the Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden. Choosing the right location is key. Botanical gardens, with their lush greenery and diverse flora, offer an incredible natural backdrop that inherently lends itself to a soft aesthetic. The diffused light filtering through trees creates a magical, ethereal glow, perfect for portraits. I always try to schedule shoots during the golden hour, when the sun is lower and casts a warm, soft light – you can see how the sunlight on my subject's face truly brings out that gentle glow. To create that signature soft aesthetic, I really focus on a few elements. First, natural light is your best friend. I look for areas where the light is even and flattering, avoiding harsh shadows. Sometimes, simply having the subject turn slightly can make all the difference, letting the light gently illuminate their features, as seen with one young woman’s blonde hair catching the sun. Posing plays a huge role too. I encourage natural, relaxed poses that reflect the subject's personality. We had subjects looking directly at the camera with genuine smiles, and even captured two smiling young women lying on the soft green grass, heads together, looking up. These candid moments instantly add warmth and authenticity. Outfit and accessory choices are also crucial for the soft aesthetic. Think muted or pastel tones, floral patterns, and comfortable, flowing fabrics. For instance, a light blue floral top or a cardigan over another floral top perfectly complements the garden setting. Simple, elegant accessories like a pearl necklace and delicate earrings can add a touch of sophistication without overpowering the natural beauty. Even a pop of color, like red lipstick, can enhance the overall softness by adding a focal point. Finally, post-processing helps tie it all together. I aim for subtle edits that enhance the natural beauty rather than drastically altering it. This often involves slightly desaturating colors, adding a touch of warmth, and ensuring the background has a lovely, soft blur (bokeh) to make the subject truly stand out. Whether it's a young woman with long brown hair and green eyes or a radiant blonde, the goal is always to highlight their unique beauty in a gentle, artistic way. Capturing senior photos with a soft aesthetic is incredibly rewarding. It’s about creating timeless images that feel authentic and beautiful.
