A man hunt for a Michagan man lasting 11 months would finally come to an end in the early morning of March 21,1991.

Everyone was on the search for a van with a license plate from Texas. This van finally came barreling through a road block that was set up at the end of the Interstate 20 bridge over the Mississippi River. The police had managed to shoot out the back tires on the van as it drove right through. However, the driver did not come to a stop as they had hoped. Instead the man turned off of the Interstate and sped down the street, the police were closing in on him and he knew it. In hopes of knocking them off his track he would hit the police cars coming toward him at full speed with his van. When the van finally came to a stop, the man and the police exchanged multiple gunshots. The rounds the police were shooting proved to be useless though because they were hitting all the clothes and boxes in the back of the van. Not a single one of their bullets ever hit him. All of a sudden it became silent and neither the man nor the police were firing rounds anymore. One of the officers took this opportunity to slowly creep up to the van, this is when he noticed the man slumped over his steering wheel so he cautiously opened the driver's door. There was clearly a large amount of blood and initially the officer thought they had managed to get a shot in. They however did not the man had taken his own life with his .357 Caliber Magnum at approximately 4am.

... Read moreWow, reading about Dennis DePue's final chase really got me thinking about the whole case. It's truly a dark piece of Michigan history, and I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what made it so infamous, especially its connection to the 'Jeepers Creepers' legend. The original article focuses on the dramatic conclusion, but the story of Dennis DePue really begins with the tragic disappearance of his wife, Marilynn DePue, in April 1990. Their marriage was reportedly troubled, and Marilynn vanished from their home in Coldwater, Michigan. Dennis claimed she had just left, but alarm bells quickly rang for authorities. The search for Marilynn, and later for Dennis, became a widespread effort across Michigan and beyond. It’s hard to imagine the fear and uncertainty during those months, wondering what exactly had happened to Marilynn and if Dennis was involved. What truly cemented this case in popular culture, and what many search for when they type 'Jeepers Creepers Michigan,' is the chilling incident that inspired parts of the horror film. Dennis DePue's brother, Stephen DePue, witnessed Dennis disposing of what appeared to be a body wrapped in a sheet behind an abandoned brick building near their property. This gruesome scene, combined with Dennis's evasive behavior and later, his cross-country flight in his distinctive van, directly influenced a pivotal scene in the movie. The image of a man dumping a body, and later the discovery of the victim, echoes the film's premise where the Creeper disposes of victims. It's fascinating how a real-life horror can seep into fiction, making the legend even more terrifying. The details of Stephen's testimony were crucial in understanding the depth of Dennis's actions. The 11-month manhunt for Dennis DePue wasn't just a local affair; it spanned multiple states. He managed to evade capture for nearly a year, reportedly traveling through Texas, Mississippi, and other locations, always one step ahead. It's incredible to think about the resources poured into finding him, and how his escape prolonged the agony for Marilynn's family. The article vividly describes the chaotic freeway chase in Mississippi involving his van, a detail often highlighted in recollections of the case. The image of his bullet-riddled van and the final, shocking discovery of his suicide in the driver's seat paints a grim picture. His death by a .357 Caliber Magnum brought an end to the physical pursuit, but not to the questions surrounding his motives and the full extent of his actions. Even after his death, the case remained a subject of intense interest. Marilynn's body was eventually found, confirming the worst fears. This whole saga, from the initial disappearance to the final chase and the inspiration for a horror movie, makes Dennis DePue's story a deeply unsettling piece of true crime history. It really makes you reflect on the hidden horrors that can exist behind closed doors, even in seemingly quiet towns.
