... Read moreI can't believe this day is finally here. According to the way I planned my life when I was small, today was supposed to be my wedding day! And honestly, it’s a bit surreal to think about. I remember sitting in my room, probably around eight or nine years old, meticulously drawing out my wedding dress, picking out the 'perfect' imaginary groom (usually a cartoon character or a boy from school I had a crush on for a week), and even mapping out the reception. There would be a huge cake, all my friends and family, and of course, a fairy-tale ending. I had this specific date ingrained in my mind, a day that felt so far away then, yet so real in my imagination. Fast forward to today, and well, let's just say the only 'big event' happening is me trying to decide what to cook for dinner. No fancy dress, no groom, just me, my comfy PJs, and a strong cup of coffee. It’s funny, right? The stark contrast between that vivid childhood fantasy and my current, perfectly ordinary, adult reality. The emojis 🤦‍♀️😂🤦‍♀️😂🤦‍♀️ perfectly capture my feelings about it all – a mix of embarrassment, amusement, and a tiny bit of wistfulness. It makes you wonder, doesn't it? What happened to that little girl's grand plans? Did I fail? Or did life just take me on a different, equally valid, path? I think it's the latter. As we grow up, our dreams evolve. What seemed like the absolute pinnacle of happiness as a child often shifts. We learn more about ourselves, what truly makes us happy, and sometimes, those fairytale endings don't quite fit the narrative of a fulfilling life anymore. My priorities changed, my understanding of love and partnership deepened, and the 'perfect' wedding day became less about the date and more about the journey. It's not to say there isn't a part of me that feels a pang of nostalgia or even a tiny bit of wistfulness for that imagined day. But mostly, it's a moment for reflection. I've built a life that's rich in other ways—challenging career goals, incredible friendships, unexpected adventures. My 'wedding day' might not be happening today, but I'm incredibly grateful for the journey that brought me to this present moment, whatever it holds. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most beautiful realities are the ones we never even dreamed of as kids. This experience isn't unique to a wedding day, either. So many of us had these grand visions as kids – becoming an astronaut, a pop star, living in a castle. And then adulthood arrives, and we're navigating mortgages, career ladders, and personal growth. It's about finding the beauty in the reality we create, even if it looks nothing like the crayon drawings from our youth. So, if today was 'supposed to be' something grand for you too, take a moment. Smile at your younger self's optimism, and then embrace the awesome, messy, beautiful reality you're living right now. Our childhood dreams may not always come true exactly as planned, but the reality can be just as, if not more, wonderful.
