Learning how to speak like a Targaryen?? Yes pls!

2024/7/31 Edited to

... Read moreAs a huge fan of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, I’ve always been captivated by the majestic High Valyrian language. Hearing characters like Daenerys Targaryen speak it just gives me chills! It's not just a fictional language; it's a key part of the world-building, tying directly to the Targaryen lineage and their powerful dragons. Learning High Valyrian has been a dream of mine, and I'm so excited to share my personal journey and tips on how you can start speaking like a true Valyrian yourself! When I first decided to dive into learning High Valyrian, I wasn't sure where to begin. Luckily, I found a fantastic language learning interface that even featured a special section for it, complete with a cool red dragon icon! It felt like I was truly embarking on a quest to master the tongue of the Dragonlords. This app offers a variety of languages, from common ones like Swahili and Romanian to unique options like Klingon and, of course, High Valyrian. I’ve made it a point to dedicate time each day, often on specific days like "WEDNESDAY," to practice my lessons. Consistency is key! So, what exactly is High Valyrian? It's the ancient, prestigious language spoken by the nobility of the Valyrian Freehold, and crucially, by the Targaryen family. While many commoners speak Low Valyrian dialects, High Valyrian is a symbol of power and heritage. Learning it has allowed me to appreciate the show on a whole new level, catching phrases and nuances I previously missed. My goal is to understand every word when Daenerys or Rhaenyra speak it without needing subtitles! For anyone wondering how to speak Valyrian, my advice is to start with the basics. Begin with common phrases. "Valar Morghulis" (All men must die) and "Valar Dohaeris" (All men must serve) are iconic, but there's so much more! I've been practicing simple greetings like "Rytsas!" (Hello!) and expressions of affection or command. The grammar can be a bit tricky, with its complex declensions, but the language learning interface breaks it down into manageable chunks. It’s incredibly rewarding when you finally nail a sentence! Of course, no discussion of High Valyrian would be complete without talking about dragon commands! This was one of the biggest motivators for me. Imagine being able to command a dragon – even just in your head! Famous commands like "Dracarys!" (Dragonfire!) are just the beginning. Others include "Sōve!" (Fly!) and "Arrax!" (A dragon's name, often used as a command to its rider). Practicing these has been so much fun, and I even try them out with my pets (though they haven't quite gotten the hang of flying or breathing fire yet!). The sound of these words feels so powerful, and it truly makes you feel connected to the Targaryen legacy. My tips for fellow aspiring Valyrians? First, immerse yourself! Watch House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones with Valyrian subtitles, or even try listening to dialogue without subtitles once you feel more confident. Second, practice regularly. Even 10-15 minutes a day makes a huge difference. Third, don't be afraid to make mistakes; it’s all part of the learning process. Finally, find a community! Sharing your progress and frustrations with other enthusiasts makes the journey even more enjoyable. It’s a unique and incredibly fun language to learn, and I encourage everyone to give it a try!

How to Speak to Yourself 🌸
It’s so important to be kind to others. A lot of us are PROS at making everyone else feel encouraged and loved. What we struggle with is not how we treat others, but how we treat ourselves. We hold ourselves to unrealistic standards and when we inevitably do not meet them, we beat ourselves
