The #1 Lazy Girl Plant Hack for Thriving Plants!

Bottom Watering.💦

Yepp, it’s really that easy.

What you’ll need:

1. A container that holds water

2. Fertilizer (I use DynaGro Superthrive)

3. A gallon jug of water

Directions:

1. Following the measurements on the back of your fertilizer, add the water and fertilizer to your container

2. Add your plants

3. Do literally anything else while they refuel

4. Drain excess water and return them to their pretty pots

—-

I personally let mine soak for a few hours (and have even forgotten them overnight). As long as you’re not watering too frequently and you’re allowing them to properly drain the excess water, you don’t need to be concerned with root issues.

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about bottom watering – it's truly a game-changer for someone like me who loves plants but isn't always the most diligent caregiver! But why does it work so well, and what else can you do to keep your green buddies happy? Let me share a bit more from my own plant journey. First off, the magic of bottom watering really lies in how it encourages your plant's root system. When you water from the top, water often just drains straight through, and the roots near the surface might get all the hydration, leaving deeper roots dry. With bottom watering, your plant's roots actively seek out the moisture from below, drawing up exactly what they need. This promotes stronger, deeper root growth, making your plant more resilient and less prone to common issues like root rot caused by stagnant topsoil. I've found it particularly beneficial for plants that hate getting their leaves wet, like African Violets, or those with very dense foliage where it's hard to get water directly to the soil. Succulents also absolutely adore it because it helps prevent their delicate leaves from rotting due to surface moisture. Now, while I mentioned I've forgotten my plants soaking overnight (oops!), it's generally best practice to let them soak for a good 20-30 minutes, or until the topsoil feels damp to the touch. Then, always let them drain thoroughly. If you leave them sitting in standing water for too long consistently, even with bottom watering, you can still run into issues. A good rule of thumb is to feel the soil about an inch or two deep – if it's dry, it's probably time for a drink! Speaking of thriving, fertilizer is another key. The original post mentioned DynaGro Superthrive, and I can vouch for how amazing products like SUPERthrive Foliage-Pro are. It's not just about watering; feeding your plants the right nutrients makes a huge difference in their overall health and growth. I usually add a diluted amount to my bottom watering container every few weeks during the growing season. My plants have seen noticeable growth in height and leaf size since I started this routine – sometimes adding an inch or more of new growth in a short period! Beyond watering and feeding, don't forget light and humidity. Even the laziest plant parent can place their plant in the right spot! Most houseplants love bright, indirect light. And if your home is dry, a simple humidity tray (a tray with pebbles and water) can do wonders without much effort. These little tricks, combined with the bottom watering hack, will have your plants looking lush and vibrant in no time. It's all about creating a routine that works for you and your plants, making plant care feel less like a chore and more like a joy!
