Propagation doesn’t need to be complicated🌱

Water propagation is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to grow your plant collection. If you are just getting started, or you want better results, here are my tried and true tips for happy, healthy roots:

1) Snip below a node (always clean scissors first)

That little bump is where new roots form. No node means no roots.

2) Remove the lower leaves

Only the stem should sit in water. Leaves in water break down and cause bacteria and rot.

3) Let the cutting dry before placing in water

Let it air out overnight so a callous can form. This helps prevent rot and gives the cutting a strong start.

4) Clear jars are best

See root growth, spot issues early, and keep it cute at the same time.

5) Change the water weekly

Fresh water means more oxygen, which means happier roots. If the water gets cloudy, change it sooner and trim away any mushy or brown roots.

6) Bright indirect light

Too much direct sunlight heats the water and causes algae. Bright, filtered light is perfect.

7) Add fertilizer only after roots develop

Roots first, food later. Plants cannot use nutrients until they have a root system, so wait until you see strong growth before feeding.

8) Wait to pot up

Let roots grow thick and 2 to 3 inches long before moving to soil so they transition smoothly without shock.

9) Be patient and enjoy the process

Water roots can take time. Celebrate the little growth moments and let your cuttings develop a strong foundation.

✨ Bonus tip

Propagation drops can support faster, healthier root development.

Drop a photo of your propagation station and tell me what you are rooting right now.
