Biggest Reality Checks When Studying Abroad

2025/11/27 Edited to

... Read moreOne of the most unexpected challenges I faced was realizing just how expensive daily life could be away from home. Unlike living with family where expenses are shared, studying abroad means you are responsible for rent, groceries, bills, and unexpected costs. Budgeting became a vital skill quickly learned and one that I underestimated initially. Making friends abroad was far from the instant connections often portrayed in media. Instead, it started with many awkward small talks and cautious trust-building over time. I learned to put myself out there more, joining clubs and study groups, which really helped to create meaningful friendships. Cooking was another big reality check. Gone were the days of coming home to family-cooked meals. It was now just me, a frying pan, and some questionable attempts at pasta. Cooking turned into a life skill I had to embrace, not just for nutrition but also for managing my budget and health. These experiences taught me resilience, independence, and practical skills beyond academics. If you’re studying abroad or planning to, prepare for these realities — and remember, you’re definitely not alone in facing them. Sharing your story can also make the journey more rewarding.
