Review: 698 Restaurant

After the iconic Rigby’s restaurant closed in 2015, its Short North space between Lincoln and Brickel Streets became home to a comparatively brisk succession of projects. For a time, it was Harvey & Ed’s, a joint styled after a Jewish Deli. Then it became El Segundo, a Mexican joint. These days, 698 N. High St. is doing something entirely different with the space: It’s sushi time.

... Read moreOkay, so I finally made it to 698 Restaurant in Columbus's vibrant Short North, and let me tell you, it's quickly become one of my new favorites! I'd heard whispers about its amazing sushi and bulgogi, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The location itself has seen a few transformations, but I think 698 has truly found its stride, bringing a fresh, modern Asian dining experience to the area. My main mission was to try the sushi, and I was not disappointed. The menu offers a fantastic selection, and I opted for a mix of classic and specialty rolls. The salmon and avocado rolls were incredibly fresh, beautifully presented on a sleek wooden board, with just the right amount of pickled ginger on the side. I also tried some of their nigiri, and the quality of the fish was top-notch – melt-in-your-mouth perfection. You can really tell they focus on fresh ingredients. The plates adorned with avocado slices, red roe, and black roe were almost too pretty to eat, showcasing the chef's attention to detail. But it wasn't just about the sushi! I absolutely had to try the bulgogi, and wow, what an experience. It came out on a sizzling plate, hot and fragrant, with tender, thinly sliced beef perfectly marinated and mixed with sweet onions and green scallions. Served with a comforting bowl of fluffy white rice, it was a symphony of flavors – savory, slightly sweet, and incredibly satisfying. It’s the kind of dish that warms you from the inside out, making it perfect for any weather. The portion was generous, and it was clear this dish is a crowd-pleaser. Beyond the main stars, I also discovered some delightful surprises. We ordered a bamboo steamer, and out came these adorable, golden-brown pastries – almost like delicate dim sum. They were incredibly light and flavorful, a perfect little bite. It’s these thoughtful additions to the menu that elevate the whole dining experience from good to absolutely memorable. I love when a restaurant offers a variety beyond just their advertised specialties. The ambiance at 698 Restaurant is chic but comfortable. It’s the kind of place you could go for a casual weeknight dinner or a special occasion. The staff were attentive and friendly, offering great recommendations without being pushy. It’s clear they take pride in their food and service. Given its prime spot on N. High St., it’s super convenient for anyone exploring the Short North arts district. Overall, if you're in Columbus and craving high-quality sushi, authentic bulgogi, or just a fantastic meal in a great atmosphere, 698 Restaurant is a must-visit. It truly offers a diverse menu that caters to different tastes, making it a versatile choice. From the freshest salmon rolls to the sizzling bulgogi, every dish I tried was a winner. I’m already planning my next visit to explore more of their menu!
