Linux smashed the record. Users have surpassed 5% for the first time in history. 🍋
Most recently, Linux, an open-source operating system, set a new record in the United States with a market share on desktop computers exceeding 5% in the United States for the first time in its history. According to StatCounter, June 2025, Linux occupies 5.03%, the highest figure since data was collected. It represents a leap in the popularity of alternative operating systems that are becoming increasingly active.

Although Windows still dominates the market with a share of 63.2%, the trend has been steadily declining over the past 10 years. Apple's system segment has combined at around 24%, while Chrome OS is 2.71% and "unknown" systems 4.76%. Linux has also surpassed the Unknown category for the first time.

What brought Linux more attention, in part, came from user dissatisfaction with Microsoft's guidelines, specifically the end of Windows 10 support that squeezed it to upgrade to Windows 11, which had stringent hardware requirements, including privacy issues, forced updates, and in-system ads that many were starting to be unokay with.

There are also a lot of users who have turned to Linux to revive old machines with lighter and safer systems, or some have come to know Linux from the Steam Deck game machine, which makes the memory that Linux is difficult to use fade and become a new option that is both stable, easy to use and better to solve every day.
