Windows 11 up the popular OS podium
Statcounter has released the latest data on Windows usage worldwide, with a new report stating that Windows 11 has become the most popular Windows operating system. It is installed in 49.02% of all Windows PCs. After a huge surge in July 2025, it topped the deal slightly last Aug.

As of September 1, 2025, Windows 11 occupies a global market share of 49.02% (down 4.49 points), while Windows 10 is 45.65% (up 2.77 points), with the rest divided to older Windows that have long since given up supports like Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows XP that, despite stopping updating for more than 11 years, still have users.

In the United States, Windows 11 was more popular, with a steady increase in market share reaching 59.28%, the UK segment was even higher, at 60.53%, while in Europe, Windows 10 remained the most popular version, with a market share of 53.01%, while Windows 11 had 43.89%.

Statcounter states that the data may not be 100% accurate, and only Microsoft can provide accurate figures from its telemetry systems, but Microsoft has never released official figures like Apple reported detailed operating system usage data, forcing users and developers to rely on external analytics services instead.

The reason for Windows 11's increasing number of users is likely to be that Windows 10 is running out of supply phase in the next month. However, Microsoft has announced for the first time that Windows 10 will receive a free Extended Security Update (ESU) for 12 months to give users who are not ready to upgrade the opportunity to adapt and prepare before moving to a new version.
