Many people may have used to find tapes or stickers to put on webcam cameras in case they were hacked or secretly shone, which was considered by many to be overrated, but today it's no longer funny because there's a new malware that can actually do that and it's scarier than I thought.

This malware called Stealerium has been found by researchers at Proofpoint since last May. It has even been released as open source code on GitHub since 2022, purportedly for educational purposes, but has actually been used by hackers.

The way it spreads is a traditional formula: a phishing email that attaches fake files or sends a trick link to the victim to download. Once you add it, you start stealing all kinds of information - usernames, passwords, cookies, payment information, or even the login tokens we hold.

But what makes Stealerium unique and scary is its ability to "pry" the user's behavior. It detects 18 + web access with the words "sex" or "porn," and then takes a screenshot with the camera on, the webcam takes the victim immediately, and then sends all the files back to the hackers, using it as a blackmail threat to release the image or clip to friends, family, or close people if they don't pay.

This reflects that cybercrime is taking it a step further, not just stealing money or information, but playing with privacy and shame. The defense is not very complicated. Just be careful not to press strange links, use antivirus programs, always update the system, and if you want to be sure, tape off the camera when you used to do it.
