After rumors emerged earlier that Microsoft was developing a "dark theme" of Windows 11 to cover all parts of the system, an official announcement was made that the feature was actually coming.

In the update to Windows 11 Insider Preview (Dev Channel) Build 26220.6772, Microsoft expanded its support for dark themes even deeper. This time it includes not only the Settings or Start Menu pages, but also the long-complaining parts of the user like File Explorer. Whether it's file copy windows, file moves, file deletions, notification boxes, right-click menus, and progress bars and confirmation boxes, all now blend into the black theme. There is no longer the same white light as before.

Microsoft also optimized the design of menus and windows to look more harmonious. It does not feel like putting old and new pieces against each other in a polished way. In the Build 26120 test version, there is a change in the color of the progress graph to look fresher, such as blue at normal work, light yellow at "hold" and dark red when there is a mistake. Look at the dark theme.

By now, there will still be some spots like Windows Properties, the Run box, and parts of the Control Panel that are still white space, but it's considered that this round of updates is Microsoft's big step toward making Windows 11 have a "really dark" theme, as users have long been waiting for.

This feature will start letting casual users experience it in the big update Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, which is probably the first time Windows black theme has become a pretty, slick and real consistent theme across the system.
