Microsoft is preparing to release a new monthly update, known as "Patch Tuesday," that will be released every second Tuesday of the month, but this time the company is promoting a new update like Windows Hotpatch Updates that reduces restarting to update security patches.

Hotpatch Updates are a "small" update that only sends security patches. Unlike Cumulative Updates, new features and edits from older versions come in the same set, they are larger and take longer to install. Hotpatch runs through the Windows Autopatch system that automatically manages and installs them without requiring the user to press the update.

The highlight is that Hotpatch is ten times smaller than normal updates, is fast to install, uses little bandwidth, and does not need to reboot because Microsoft uses "in-memory code changes" or code changes in memory directly to plug loopholes without interfering with the core of the system. It suits organizations that need high security but do not want employees to stop waiting for updates.

Microsoft has stated that Hotpatch will be based on the "Baseline Update" released four times a year in January, April, July and October. In the intermediate months between each cycle, Hotpatch will be released twice for continuous security updates without restarting.

In other words, after Baseline Update is released on Tuesday, two months from now, we'll see a round of Hotpatch Updates installed immediately. No reboot, no time off. Anyone who wants to try it can set it up through Windows Autopatch.
