HDDs are becoming more expensive worldwide because AI is used too much.
The global hard disk market is facing a prolonged shortage after demand from data centers and AI systems has skyrocketed to excess capacity, especially enterprise-grade hard disks (Enterprise / Nearline HDDs) with 24 months of outstanding orders, resulting in an average price hike of 10-30% within a single year, mainly due to accelerated data center generation and Generative AI systems, requiring huge storage space for large-scale training and processing models.

Major manufacturers Seagate and Western Digital agree that orders from major cloud segments such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud are steadily increasing, causing general user products to become in short supply. Factories have to divide their production power between HDD, DRAM, and NAND that have all been sucked into the AI market simultaneously, resulting in fewer existing stock reserves.

This has led some operators to start using QLC SSDs (Quad-Level Cells) instead of hard disks in certain job categories, such as Cold Storage or Warm Storage, because the price per capacity is getting closer and current technology can better support large workloads, but the rapid increase in demand for QLC has resulted in NAND capacity being fully booked up to 2026, risking redundancy for both HDD and SSD.

The impact on general users is that cost-effective hard disk and SSD prices are likely to rise. Some products may be in short supply or delayed delivery. At the same time, the crisis is a golden opportunity for Thailand, which is still the world's largest hard disk manufacturing base of more than 80%. Seagate and Western Digital are set to invest more than $39 billion to expand production and support global demand, reinforcing Thailand's role as a global hard disk manufacturing hub.
