This memory crisis can be called for the general user market to be a universal one, from the huge surge in prices for PCs in recent times to the smartphone market, where manufacturers may start to provide less RAM and capacity, opening the way for users to increase their storage via the microSD Card instead. That trend clearly reflects that memory is becoming an increasingly difficult cost for manufacturers to control.

According to TrendForce, the DRAM shortage is continuing to deteriorate as large amounts of capacity are drawn into the AI, data center and enterprise server markets, resulting in significantly higher cost of memory for consumer devices. Notebook manufacturers have begun to restructure their product specifications to control costs and maintain price levels.

The obvious approach is to push 8GB of RAM back to basic specs on a large scale, while 16GB or 32GB config are priced much higher. Some models charge upgrades from 16GB to 32GB, up to $550 or nearly 20,000 baht, causing a small number of users to start delaying new purchases.

TrendForce sees the return of 8GB RAM notebooks not as a technology backdrop, but as an adaptation of manufacturers to the AI-era supply chain, which placed more emphasis on the stability of memory supply than on specification pushes.

If this situation still stretches back to 2026, mid-market users may have to get used to low RAM notebooks at higher prices and choose more carefully whether to pay more for long-term fluidity or accept specification constraints to control their own budgets.
