Many people who have been using Windows 11 for a while will likely have seen ads or app recommendations pop up at different points of the system, whether in the Start menu, the Settings page, or even during the use of the basic features of the system. This does not count the promotion of apps and services from Microsoft itself that often come in the form of "Recommendations," so that not many users feel disturbed.

Most recently, Microsoft is reportedly preparing to add an option to allow Windows 11 users to turn off ads on certain parts of the system, especially in windows for file sharing.

The report came from an X user named phantomofearth, who found that Microsoft was updating the Nearby sharing setup page, a file-sharing feature between Windows PCs running AirDrop-like on macOS. This setup page will be renamed "Share," even though the Nearby sharing feature is still available as usual.

A major turning point was the addition of options for turning off app introductions in the Share or Share sheet window, where Windows 11 previously often displayed apps like Instagram, WhatsApp or other services in the manner of instructions. To persuade users to install more apps on board, many saw these as latent ads rather than as facilitating features.

Although the app instructions cannot be closed directly from the share window, users can close them through the Settings > System > Share menu by disclosing the "Show me recommendations apps in share surfaces" option. This will cause the share window to display only apps that are already installed.

This change marked another step for Microsoft to reduce advertising within Windows 11. The company previously updated the new Start menu, allowing users to close the Recommended section in full to free up more space for their apps. While Windows 11 is not completely ad-free, opening the way for more users to control these things reflects that Microsoft is starting to listen to more user echoes in the latter.
