Microsoft is set to add new capabilities to Microsoft Edge, automating Copilot every time a user clicks a link from an email in Outlook. The goal is for the AI to come in and help summarize and build data from that link immediately during use.

The theme is that when a link is pressed in an email, the web page is opened through Edge, the browser will open the Copilot bar at the same time. Copilot will summarize the content of the page, highlight key points, and offer actions such as a reply email draft, or prepare information for an appointment.

Microsoft stated that the feature was added to increase ease of use of Copilot and make web browsing through Edge even more efficient. This news was announced through the Microsoft 365 Roadmap page and scheduled to be released gradually in May. The status was specified as General Availability, meaning it will be open to users, both groups of individuals and organizations with Copilot rights.

Previously, since 2023, Microsoft used to add an Outlook context pane in Edge that would display some data when opening links from email, but the new feature will leverage Copilot's AI capabilities to help analyze more content.

The Outlook bar in Edge is currently not enabled by default. It is not yet clear if Copilot is fully entered and how users can adjust or disable it.

This move increasingly mirrored Microsoft's direction of wanting to integrate Copilot into the company's core services, in both Edge, Outlook, and the Microsoft 365 suite, so that AI would become a direct part of its daily workflow.
